Dr. Charles Garvin is Chairperson of the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank (PPB). An AKC Delegate since 1990, he is serving his 23rd year on the AKC Board of Directors and 15 years on the the AKC CHF board, 8 as Chair. Dr. Garvin is a recently retired ophthalmic surgeon and physician executive.

In this era of an ever-shrinking number of purebred dog breeders, how do we protect the future of our breeds? Dr. Garvin, chairperson of the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank (PPB), presented a detailed discussion of a program designed to address the problem. The mission of the PPB is to preserve the genetic material from purebred dog breeds through a voluntary program of frozen semen donation and preservation that is coordinated with parent clubs. The discussion covered the technical aspects of semen collection, storage, and distribution, along with future plans for breed preservation and the program's policies, while addressing concerns about breed club participation and the management of donated semen samples.
